Motorcycle Rider Dies in Tuesday Night Crash in Rural LaPorte County

A motorcycle rider is dead, after a crash Tuesday night in rural LaPorte County. LaPorte County Police say it happened shortly before 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 421 and County Road 800 South.

Officers believe Michael Mays, 47, of rural Michigan City, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle west on 800 South. Witnesses told police Mays never slowed down or stopped at the intersection and crashed into the side of a 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer that was heading north on 421.

Police say Mays wasn’t wearing a helmet. He was dead by the time sheriff’s deputies arrived. The cause of death was blunt force trauma, according to the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office. A blood test reportedly found that Mays had a blood alcohol concentration of .15 percent.

The occupants of the TrailBlazer were uninjured, and its driver had a blood alcohol concentration of zero, according to police.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Westville Police Department, LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services, the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office, and the Cass-Clinton Fire Department.
