Knox Man Charged with Neglect

Two charges have been filed against a Knox man who allegedly left his two young children alone without adult supervision.

According to charging information filed by the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office, 29-year-old Erick Short is charged with two Level 6 Felony counts of neglect of a dependent. He allegedly left them at home and went at a bar establishment late in the evening on Tuesday, July 31.

In the police report filed with the criminal charging information, a Knox City Police officer was called to the residence after a child called 9-1-1 to report that she was left alone with her infant sister. When Short arrived at the home a short time later, he reportedly admitted to having consumed alcohol before the left the home. The report indicated that the portable breathalyzer test measured Short’s breath with a result of .05.

When the officer checked on the baby, he noted that the baby was in good health, according to the report. Short was asked to call his wife to come to the house. She was at work while this occurred and Short had reportedly gone to visit her when the child called police.
