Knox School Board Accepts More Than $1,000 in Donations for Student Lunches

Knox students who’ve fallen behind in their lunch payments have had their debt wiped away, thanks to the generosity of the local community. Corporation Treasurer Dawn Bailey told the Knox School Board last week that an anonymous donor gave $800 to cover any negative lunch account balances.

On top of that, Poppin’ Off Popcorn donated another $250. Bailey said that extra money means students who run out of funds in their accounts will still be able to get hot lunches instead of peanut butter and jelly, at least for a period of time.

The donations were formally accepted by the school board last week.

Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart expressed his gratitude. “It’s a great asset from our community, to support our students who have delinquent lunch accounts, and both of these are deeply appreciated,” he said. “We’ll be paying off all of the students who have delinquent accounts and starting from scratch again.”

School Board President Gary Dulin noted that these aren’t the first donations that Knox Community Schools have received for that purpose. “It just seems like every couple meetings we’re getting donations from people,” he said, “and it’s really, really a good thing that people are stepping up and noticing that.”

Similar efforts are taking place in Culver, where local community members have set up a GoFundMe account to help cover negative lunch account balances at Culver Community Schools.
