The USDA Summer Food Program helped feed children all over the Kankakee Valley, including the Oregon-Davis School Corporation.
According to Oregon-Davis Food Services Director Jeff Messer, there were about 35 students who attended each day who benefited from a nutritious breakfast and lunch throughout the duration of the program in June. Free meals were available to all children ages 18 and younger and those over the age of 18 who were enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled.
Messer hopes to include a second location to serve the meals next year. Food is currently being served at the Oregon-Davis Elementary School. An opportunity to host the USDA Summer Food Program at a location in Hamlet would allow local children to possibly walk or bike to a nearby facility to eat a free, nutritious meal.
