Firefighters from the Winamac Fire Department were called to a fire in an apartment at 109 East Pearl Street Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Chief Bill Weaver said they arrived at the scene around 1:45 p.m. ET and saw fire coming out of the window of an upstairs apartment. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly, containing it to the bedroom. Smoke and water damage were sustained to the rest of the apartment and the business below the apartment suffered water damage.
Weaver noted that an investigator with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted with the investigation and found the fire to be accidental. They were reportedly unable to rule out the window air conditioner as the cause.
The residents of the apartment are being assisted with housing by the American Red Cross.
