Knox School Board Gets Update on New After-School Tutoring Initiative at Middle, High Schools

Another way to help students who have fallen behind is being put in place at Knox Middle and High schools.

High School Principal Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff told the school board last week that the school will offer hour-long, after-school tutoring sessions in both Math and Language Arts. She said two Math and two Language Arts teachers will each lead one session every week.

Ratliff explained that the program will provide homework help and give students an extra opportunity to work with a teacher. Middle School Principal Jake Skelly said the focus will be on students who need the help the most.

Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart told board members that the corporation will keep track of participants’ grades, to gauge the program’s effectiveness. “Our hope is that this is another way of helping students, and we’ve heard in the past that transportation’s been a barrier, especially at the middle school level,” he said. “So we’re going to try and remove that barrier of transportation, and we’re going to put kids on, hopefully, two buses and get them home within an hour after the program gets out. And we’ll provide snacks and things like that, as well.”

The school board approved the appointment of the four high school interventionists, along with a Math interventionist for the middle school. Director of Curriculum and Instruction Peggy Shidaker said the program will be funded by Title I and Title IV grants.
