Kouts Man Found Guilty of Fraud, Following North Judson-Area Arson Fires

A Kouts man has been found guilty in connection with an apparent insurance fraud scheme involving several properties in the North Judson area. A jury found Michael Thomas, 41, guilty after a four-day trial in U.S. District Court, according to U.S. Attorney Thomas Kirsch.

A grand jury indictment alleged that Thomas and others took out insurance policies on several homes that he owned near North Judson, just before each of them burnt down in arson fires. The fires reportedly took place between 2004 and 2013. Kirsch says Thomas and others got more than $600,000 from insurance companies, as a result.

Thomas is scheduled to be sentenced on January 17.
