Local Red Cross Volunteer Training to Assist Flood Victims in North Carolina

A Winamac woman was chosen to be a part of a leadership group to lead mass care efforts in North Carolina.

Sherry Fagner said she is one of 21 people in seven American Red Cross divisions in Indiana to take part in the Mass Care Training at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia this week.

“They are getting us prepared to do whatever is needed out in the field of mass care,” Fagner explained. “It could be feeding, sheltering, reunification, and it could be distribution of emergency supplies.”

She said she’s heard about all different types of damage they will encounter.

“We’ve heard all kinds of reports of damage. There are still some communities that are pretty inaccessible due to water that is blocking the roads into those communities. I don’t have the exact number of what we’ve heard, but there are several communities that still aren’t accessible.”

She will be deployed to Durham, North Carolina today where she will be the Assistant Feeding Lead. Fagner is currently a part of the Regional Feeding Lead of the American Red Cross in Indiana and she also is a part of the Disaster Action Team. She responds to any home fires or other disasters that occur locally to assist in a variety of needs.

Fagner said she’d keep the listeners up-to-date as she is able to relay the work she’s done in this recovery effort.
