At this week’s Knox City Council meeting, Mayor Dennis Estok urged residents to take advantage of an opportunity to rid their homes and yards of hazardous waste and clutter during the annual Starke County Environmental Day.
According to information provided in a promotional flier, all Starke County residential property owners are welcome to swing by the County Highway Garage from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. today to properly dispose of various unwanted items and household hazardous waste in a safe, drive-thru environment.
In addition to household hazardous waste, residents can bring in medications, tires, appliances, electronics and televisions. Residents are permitted to bring in one television for free and then there is a $15 fee for each additional TV. Officials note that there is a limit of 5 free tires. Tires that are 54’’ or larger must be quartered or a fee of $75 per tire will be charged.
There are certain items that will not be accepted, including medical, clinical or infectious waste, lab chemicals, radioactive materials, asbestos and wet latex paint. They also won’t take regular household garbage, alkaline batteries, construction materials, furniture, carpeting, grills or mowers. The Starke County Environmental Management District reserves the right to refuse any items they deem as unacceptable. This event is restricted to Starke County residents only and regulations prohibit the collection of hazardous waste from businesses, churches, schools and non-profit organizations.
