Winamac Police Officer Commended, Town Council Weighs in on Decal Decision

A Winamac Police Officer was commended during Monday night’s town council meeting.

During Town Marshal Mark Hoffman’s report, he noted that since school is back in session, they’ve increased patrols around there, specifically when students are getting on and off the busses. Councilwoman Judy Heater commented on the performance of Officer Brian Gaillard.

Heater said, “He gets out of the car and directs traffic or watches traffic and directs it if need be and I think that’s very nice and I know that people down there appreciate it.” She asked Marshal Hoffman to thank Officer Gaillard on the council’s behalf.

In addition to delivering his report, Hoffman asked the council members to weigh in on whether or not the department’s new Durango should have decals that indicate it is a Winamac Police vehicle.

He said that there was a general consensus amongst the police officers to leave it unmarked. However, since it is a town vehicle, Hoffman said he wanted to get the council’s input.

Town Council President Tom Murray said he liked the idea of leaving it as it is but the majority of the other council members felt that it should be marked because visibility is important so citizens can identify law enforcement in case of an emergency.

A motion was made, recommending that the Police Department put decals on the Durango, and it passed.
