Knox City Council to Develop Policy for New Message Board

Now that the City of Knox has its new electronic message board up and running, city officials are now trying to figure out what to put on it. Mayor Dennis Estok asked the city council members last week to start thinking about what should and shouldn’t be allowed on the new sign.

“We have to have a policy, and I know Ronny brought up about if somebody wants to advertise and pay,” Estok said. “I think we can do that to a certain extent, but you’re really going to have to monitor that because you can’t have 10 businesses take up the whole sign because you go by panels and all that and so you’ve got to make sure you limit it to one a day or something. That should be in the policy.”

Estok said that he would like to spotlight local businesses, “I want to have like a business of the month or something for the businesses out there that are in Knox, to reward them.”

But he stressed that the sign will not be used for political messages. “I’ve already been asked. I said ‘Absolutely not.’ It’s not for politics, that message board isn’t,” Estok said. “So that’s one no-no. But we do need to get going on that and get a policy in place so we have a guideline to go by.”

Estok said he thinks the message board will be a good asset if it’s used properly.
