The Hamlet Town Council added a few items to its wish list of improvements Wednesday. Plans are in the works to upgrade Railroad Street, as part of a future round of Community Crossings grants.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Street Superintendent Fred Rowe suggested that the intersection of Starke and Indiana streets could use some work, as well. “We get a lot of trucks through town,” he said, “not only going out to the factory – and they stop there and they turn right there – but we get all the farm trucks up and down all day long during harvest.”
Meanwhile, Council President Dave Kesvormas thought the town could work with Starke County to repair Plymouth Street east to U.S. 30. “You see the grass is starting to grow up through it, and that’s not going to be good once we get water in that and then freezing,” he said. “That road is going to come apart real quick.” Kesvormas also talked about drainage improvements to area of Madison and Hamlet streets.
At the same time, town officials continue looking into the possibility of adding more lights along the north end of Starke Street. Kesvormas said he thinks he found a cheaper option than what was originally proposed. “They were 11 feet tall,” he explained. “They were all aluminum. They somewhat had the antique-y look. They’re not as fancy as these, and they’re like $760 apiece plus shipping.” He felt that six lights would be sufficient. However, the cost of running the electricity still needs to be finalized.
During Wednesday’s park board meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts told members that there’s enough money left in this year’s budget to buy some equipment.
