The SCILL Center is once again teaming up with the City of Knox to provide some fall time lawn care assistance to senior citizens and physically disabled residents.
At Tuesday night’s Knox City Council meeting, Mayor Dennis Estok issued a reminder about this opportunity. He noted that the SCILL Center is only able to accommodate 15 residences and the service is provided on a first come, first served basis.
SCILL Center Executive Director Jerry Gurrado said they’d like to be able to help more people but they only have so many students available to do the work.
He mentioned that there isn’t a specific date that the lawns will be cleared, but it will be done once all the leaves have fallen off the trees. Gurrado said on the day of the clean up, about 3 to 4 teams of students and instructors will be out with tarps, rakes and leaf blowers.
He said they clear the yards and then pile all the leaves by the curbs. Gurrado added that they coordinate with Mayor Estok who makes sure the street department gets all the leaves cleaned up in a timely manner so they don’t have time to blow back into the yards.
Interested and eligible individuals need to contact the Mayor’s Office by November 13th in order to receive assistance. Once 15 people call in to request assistance, no more names will be taken down. The number to call is 574-772-4553.
