The Starke County Commissioners unanimously approved their signatures on a document proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Commissioner Kathy Norem read aloud from the proclamation that noted three women a day are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the United States and one in four women and one in 13 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. It also stated that children who grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused and neglected at a rate higher than the national average.
Annette Ohman-Van Schoyck from the Starke County Coalition Against Domestic Abuse said different exhibits will be available at each of the libraries in Starke County in order to educate residents on the impacts of domestic abuse.
