Eastern Pulaski School Students Take Stop/Look Pledge

Students in the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation are taking the pledge to stop and look when it comes to school bus and student safety.

Elementary Principal Jill Collins told the Eastern Pulaski School Board members Monday night that two school bus drivers were key members in helping students become more aware of school bus safety.

“Every student at the elementary school had the opportunity to go out to the school bus and have a really personalized conversation about what kids can do to help keep themselves safe,” said Collins. “We’re going with the approach that grown-ups make mistakes. If you drop off your kids off at the elementary school in the morning, we purchased a couple of signs at the crosswalk.”

All students have a yellowish-green reflective sticker to put on backpacks or their jackets so it makes them easier to see.

Middle School Principal Ryan Dickinson said students there are taking the issue very seriously as well.

“Every single student decided that they wanted to take the pledge and they’re going to stop and look. They all were given the reflectors as well. Very soon there will be a stop/look pledge banner in the hallway down by the cafeteria. When you come to the ballgames you can see that. Very proud of their efforts that they all saw the need that they need to stop and look,” commented Dickinson.

High School Principal Rick DeFries said there is a different approach with high school students.

“They’ve got to be cautious,” said DeFries. When it’s the elementary kids it’s all about stop and look and make sure you look both ways. From the high school side, they’re in the car that’s coming up on the bus. So, we’re trying to look at it from both points of view and hopefully create an atmosphere where students are going to be very cautious.”

All school board members and Superintendent Dan Foster were all given a reflective sticker to promote bus and student safety.
