More Than 40 Knox Middle Students Getting Math, Language Arts Help, With New Tutoring Program

Knox Middle School is reporting success with its new after-school tutoring program. Principal Jake Skelly told the school board last week that between Math and English/Language Arts, about 44 students have been taking part. He felt that the school corporation’s decision to offer bus transportation for students in the program has helped boost participation. Skelly estimated that more than 60 percent of the students who’ve attended ride the bus home. The school corporation recently launched the after-school intervention program at both the middle and high schools, with funding from Title I and Title IV grants.

Language Arts is a vital educational component that will help ensure a student’s successful future. It is a foundation for communication and lifelong learning. It is surprising to find how many people do not know the terms used to describe the different elements of literacy.

Skelly also told the Knox School Board that Porter-Starke Services is currently working with almost 20 middle school students, as part of the Student Wise program that began this year. Learning to read and write your native language is an ‘art’ just as driving is a skill. Sentences can be short or long but their purpose is to communicate feelings and ideas between people.
