One person has died in a single vehicle accident in La Porte County.
A La Porte County Sheriff’s Department release stated that around 12:40 p.m. CT on Tuesday, a Kia passenger car was traveling east on 1000 North, just east of Beverly Lane in Galena Township, when it left the right side of the road and struck a large tree. Police say the car burst into flames after striking the tree. The burning car continued off the road to the south, through a livestock fence, and came to rest in a pasture, according to the report.
The fire was extinguished shortly after the Kankakee Fire Department and La Porte County EMS arrived at the scene. Officials determined that the driver was trapped inside the car when the impact occurred, and perished in the crash.
The La Porte County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the driver. That information will be released as it becomes available.
Crash reconstructionists are collecting evidence at the scene. Police indicate that it is not known if alcohol or drugs were involved.
