INDOT Advises Drivers to Stay Off Roads When the Anticipated Severe Weather Strikes

Officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation are warning drivers of potentially hazardous road conditions lasting Tuesday evening through Thursday evening.

Due to high winds and the challenges that historically low wind chills will present to plow crews in clearing roadways, officials are strongly advising Hoosier motorists to stay off the roads through Thursday, if possible.

They report that wind chills reaching -40 and below are expected to severely limit, if not negate, the ability of salt and de-icers spread by INDOT crews to combat slick spots.

Additionally, extreme temperatures are also expected to cause challenges in keeping some INDOT vehicles and plows operational. As a result, INDOT crews will be limited in how effective they can be at fighting back blowing and drifting snow and slick conditions.

If you’re unable to avoid travel, motorists should drive slowly and be prepared to encounter hazardous conditions. Expect to face slick and snow-covered roadways throughout the next 48+ hours, with INDOT’s limited ability to improve conditions.

As of 5 p.m. (CT) Tuesday evening, Pulaski, Starke and Marshall Counties were all under an orange-level Travel Watch. Stay informed about the latest changes to travel conditions by visiting the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s County Travel Status page.
