During the arctic blast experienced at the end of January, Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist alerted the Town Council members last week that two utility customers were charged for water meters that broke after they were frozen. Leist said the meters were not well insulated at the time.
Leist said that according to the most recently updated water and sewer rate ordinance anytime a meter breaks because of the cold and it it is not insulated then it is negligence on behalf of the customer. Not letting faucets drip or properly insulating the meter when town officials have sent notice out to the public to perform that action is considered negligent.
The customers were charged for the replacement of the meter which was $250.
Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim added that notification was sent and a press release was issued to urge customers to take precautions to prevent frozen pipes with instructions and it was posted on social media.
