Rensselaer Man Dies in Ice Fishing Accident

A Rensselaer man died Saturday after falling through the ice on a private pond in Jasper County.

According to an investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, 48-year-old Timothy Powers and 31-year-old Anthony Ballone, of Jasonville, were ice fishing when they both fell through the ice.  Ballone was able to reach shore and call 911.  Conservation officers say Ballone was unable to reach Powers.

Powers was recovered by members of the Rensselaer Fire Department and taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.  Ballone was treated and released from the hospital.

Officers noted that the fishermen were not wearing safety gear at the time of the accident.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Rensselaer Fire Department, Rensselaer Police Department and Prompt Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
