Winamac Town Council members will meet with the Pool Committee later this month to discuss the future of a potential swimming pool project.
Councilwoman Judy Heater spoke on behalf of the Committee and requested a sit down meeting.
Town officials coordinated with committee members who were present and scheduled the meeting for 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, February 19th.
The Winamac Town Council initially approved the formation of a Pool Committee in July of 2014 after a group of community members expressed an interest in rehabilitating the town swimming pool. Since then the committee has worked to fundraise and organize.
Initially, there was support and possible financial commitments that were set to come from the town. However, the Town withdrew support in October of 2017. The decision was due to budgetary constraints partially caused by a county-wide levy freeze as well as concerns over the feasibility of acquiring enough funds to cover long-term maintenance costs.
Last summer, Heater came before the council seeking the Town’s official support again, noting that it would allow the committee to apply for grants.
She added that their commitment would give community members confidence that their donations will be spent on the pool project. At that time, she explained that even though fundraising efforts have continued, many people are waiting to donate because they aren’t sure the project will actually happen.
In June of 2018, a decisive motion was made to withdrawal any Town support from the pool project until there’s more evidence that the money will be available for construction and long-term maintenance.
The project will be discussed more when committee members meet with town officials in the Winamac Utilities Complex next Tuesday.
