Knox Board of Works Selects Company for 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program

Knox Board of Works members considered contractors for the city’s 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement program when the met this week.

Bids from the companies Covenant Concrete and Pete Kuchel Concrete were opened Wednesday morning.

Street Superintendent Jeff Borg explained that each place provided prices for work on four properties that were submitted through the 50/50 program as well as one city project.

Borg told members, “The reason there’s five is the corner on 308 S. Prettyman, the City will be taken that up for ADA ramping there so the City will pay for 100% of that so I submitted an extra request for that.”

After adding up the various different jobs, Covenant Concrete’s total bid amount came to $15,100 while Kuchel’s bid total amounted to $14,172.

Board members inquired if each company submitted the same details for the amount of material that will be utilized for the sidewalks. Borg responded that they both worked off of the same four inches deep, five feet wide standard that the City follows.

Borg reminded the members that the City sets aside $10,000 to cover costs for their portion of the work. Property owners who submitted an application will receive a notification about how much their share will cost.

Members made a motion to award the projects to the lowest bidder, Pete Kuchel Concrete, pending Borg’s review and approval.

Mayor Dennis Estok mentioned that, in the future, they may need to include some more stipulations in the program application.

He said they should inform the public that the purpose of the program is not for cosmetic reasons but rather to replace sidewalks in a detrimental condition that could be a safety hazard.
