As prescription drug abuse grips the nation, it’s important not to become part of the statistic.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, along with area high school students, participated in Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27 which aimed at collecting unwanted, unused and expired prescription medications with no questions asked.
Officials saw a steady flow of residents during the six-hour event where they dropped off 51.5 pounds of medications. By participating in this event, residents took these medications out of the hands of abusers. The collection event also prevents the medications being flushed which could impact drinking sources in the area.
The medications now go to the incinerator to be properly destroyed.
A secured collection box remains in the main lobby of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office for year-round drop-offs.
