Knox officials are taking steps to secure grant funding to help eliminate a dilapidated structure from Main Street.
Mayor Dennis Estok informed city council members last week that before anything can be done to the rundown building located at 8 South Main Street, certain paperwork needs to be reviewed by the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation.
He noted that city officials provided information on the building to the Kankakee Iroquois Regional Planning Commission (KIRPC). He said they will add in any additional details that they have and then the documentation will be submitted for review.
Estok went on to share the proposed plan for the structure.
Mayor Estok said, “According to the engineering report the best solution is taking it down instead of trying to rehab it.”
He continued, “What we kind of would like to do is, the façade part of the building, keep it, bring it back to the original front and then have like a walkway in there where basically you walk into a courtyard.”
He added that he thinks that sort of project will be looked upon favorably by grant-awarding agencies such as the Office of Community and Rural Affairs. Additional information will be provided during future city council meetings.
