Pulaski County Assessor Requests Funding to Hire Appraiser for Appeals Process

Reassessment appeals could lead to some additional expenses for Pulaski County. Assessor Holly VanDerAa told the county council last week that there are 16 appeals from five different taxpayers that are still pending.

“I guess the bottom line is I am requesting an additional for the potential of hiring a commercial appraiser for pending litigation, and the commercial appraisal will probably be about $6,700,” she explained. “My budget does not support that at this time, so I am requesting the additional.”

VanDerAa said an appraisal would be needed if an appeal were to make it to the state tax court. She wanted to have the funding in place, in case that happens.

Council President Jay Sullivan said he was very disappointed that the Assessor’s Office’s consultant doesn’t handle the situation. VanDerAa explained that the consultant does provide an attorney who is familiar with the appeals process, but not an appraiser.

Council members agreed to advertise the $6,700 additional appropriation request for future consideration.
