North Judson Officials Prepare to Take Next Enforcement Step with Vacant Properties

The unkempt lawn of a vacant property on Arlington Street was brought up to the North Judson Town Council when members met Monday night.

A citizen expressed concerns that nothing was being done on the property since the grass has not been cut. However, Ordinance Officer Kerry Rust responded, saying that he has been conducting enforcement on the property.

He explained that there is a procedure he has to follow when a house is vacant and shared what that entails. So far he has fined the property twice and a letter has been sent to the individual who is responsible for it.

Rust said they are given a certain amount of time to address the violation and if they fail to comply, the Town Utility crew is then permitted to conduct the mowing themselves and bill the property owner.

Town Superintendent Joe Leszek added that the specified deadline included in the enforcement letter was Monday, August 26th. If nothing has been done by then, they will proceed with the mowing and bill the owner.

Officials stated that if the owner fails to pay the associated fines and charges, those will then be tacked onto their property taxes.

Rust mentioned that the Arlington Street residence isn’t the only vacant property where he has to go through with this process. He said that there are a total of three vacant homes that are currently under enforcement.
