The Pulaski County Commissioners opened a public hearing Monday morning to gather comments on a proposed grant application to help build a new fire station in Medaryville.
Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Edwin Buswell explained that since the Medaryville-White Post Fire Department cannot itself apply for the grant, the county will be applying for a $500,000 OCRA grant to help construct a new fire station north of the Medaryville Town Hall. The fire department will be the subrecipient of the grant and be in charge of the project. Buswell noted that the local match will be $1,069,507.
“They’re planning on bringing that down a little bit, but that will come from the fire department, town, White Post Township, and then they’re collecting donations at the Pulaski County Community Foundation,” commented Buswell.
The application is due Nov. 22 with the grant announcement expected in January.
No public comments were made.
The commissioners were asked to sign several documents to continue the process including the need for an income survey. A fair housing ordinance also needs to be put into place in order for the county to qualify for the grant. Buswell presented a standard ordinance to the commissioners and if any changes are needed they must be approved by the State. The commissioners will look more into that in the next month. The environmental review document was approved pending the review of County Attorney Kevin Tankersley.
