Winamac Town Council Permits Clerk-Treasurer to Look into TRECS

A program that assists municipal officials with collecting on delinquent accounts was discussed during this week’s Winamac Town Council meeting.

Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger informed members about the Tax Refund Exchange and Compliance System (TRECS) program, noting that it would enable the Town to utilize an outside source to draw from people’s tax returns to receive payments on unpaid utility bills.

She said she would coordinate with Town Attorney Justin Schramm about the associated documentation that would be required to utilize the TRECS program.

Winamac Town Council members authorized Clerk-Treasurer Berger to move forward with securing a contract for the service.

Officials in the neighboring community of Knox approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Local Governments Clearing House back in December in order to take advantage of the TRECS.
