Now that Hamlet’s Railroad Street paving project is complete, sections of the street’s sidewalk will soon get an upgrade. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts told the town council Wednesday that two residents there have applied to take part in the 50/50 sidewalk replacement program.
Pitts said one has already accepted the quote the town received from Covenant Concrete totaling about $3,000. That cost will be split between the resident and the town. Pitts said the work at the other property would cost close to $5,000, but she was still waiting to hear back from the homeowner.
Council President Dave Kesvormas felt that the 50/50 sidewalk program has proven to be successful. “Some of the sidewalks actually look contagious, and honestly, we’ve said this before in here, that the 50/50s we’ve done in the last eight, 12 years, they sand out now,” he said. “If fact, you see it’s like missing pieces now.”
The sidewalk work could start as soon as next week.
