Knox School Superintendent Reviews Recent Court of Appeals Visit

The Indiana Court of Appeals’ visit to Knox High School this month proved to be a great civics lesson for students, according to School Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart. “A lot of us just see ‘Judge Judy’ and we think that’s how all the court cases are, and so it was good for our students to be able to participate in that,” Reichhart recently told the school board.

On December 9, the Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the case of Jacob T. Kingma v. State of Indiana. Teacher Robin Banks told the school board that she and her students had been preparing for the court’s visit for months. She noted that the students were pretty excited and had several questions for the judges after the oral arguments were heard.

Reichhart added that Deputy Attorney General Sierra Murray, who represented the State, was a former Knox student. “And this was her first-ever appeals case in front of the Court of Appeals, so she said, ‘I will always remember that I got to go back to Knox to do my first one.’ It was a really cool event,” Reichhart said.

In other business, the Knox School Board agreed to continue meeting on the first Tuesday and third Monday at 6:30 p.m. in 2020. Reichhart presented the option of going back to one meeting a month, but it was noted that the extra meetings may help when it comes to the building project and budget adoption. Board members generally agreed that it was better to have more meetings scheduled and then cancel them if they aren’t needed.
