About 50 residents and officials attended a Department Natural Resources hearing on Tuesday afternoon concerning a petition to establish an East Shore Conservancy District.
The East Shore Corporation is asking for a permit to establish a conservancy district in order to treat wastewater in the Town of Culver’s Wastewater Treatment Facility.
When development of homes began in the area several years ago, representatives said an economical choice was to initiate a wetland disbursement system in order to treat waste in the area north of 18th Road in Culver. It was earlier this year when the system failed and they’re now pumping and hauling waste to the Culver Wastewater Treatment Facility for treatment.
In the proposal, the East Shore Conservancy District would be run lines from 18th Road and Queen Road to State Road 10 and hook into Culver’s northwest point of the wastewater system. Residents in the East Shore Corporation would have to hook to the system and there are over 100 members in the corporation.
The Marshall County Commissioners recently approved a motion to produce a letter of support for the establishment of the East Shore Conservancy District in Culver. Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist also submitted a letter as the town council requested. He noted that a rate study is being conducted by a consultant, and an agreement is being put together for treatment of that waste.
Town officials didn’t indicate when a decision would be handed down by the Department of Natural Resources.
