Winamac Town Council Members Voice Various Concerns

A few different concerns were touched on when the Winamac officials met Monday night. Following Town Marshal Mark Hoffman’s report to the Town Council, members provided some information that they’ve received from citizens.

Councilwoman Judy Heater shared something that she has heard from multiple members of the public.

Heater stated, “Several people have mentioned that they miss the presence of a policeman down at school in the morning and after school because it really cuts down on the speeding.”

Hoffman said they do their best to have someone stationed down there as often as they can.

Councilman Alvin Parish also provided some feedback. He stated that a resident came to him with a complaint about a town employee reportedly running a stop sign in their personal vehicle on more than one occasion.

Parish mentioned, “He thought that this gentleman was under the impression that he’s exempt from getting a ticket and I think we should let that be known that’s not the case. Hoffman replied, “Definitely.”

Parish emphasized that he didn’t know whether it was true or not but asked Marshal Hoffman to check into it and stated that he received the information from a reliable source.

Additionally, Council President Tom Murray asked Hoffman to look into a problem with a noisy dog barking through all hours of the night in a residential area.

Later in the meeting, Murray also addressed a concern he has with members of the Fire Department leaving the station door opens for extended periods of time. Councilwoman Heater added that the matter has been addressed in the past as well.

Murray said his main concern is that leaving the door open allows the heat to escape.

He explained, “We get big bills up there anyhow for heating that place and I guess the way I look at it is I pay the bills at my place so I make sure the doors are closed, the same way you guys do with your stuff, so I feel they could do the same.”

Murray mentioned that Fire Chief Bill Weaver approached him and stated that he has addressed the issue with the firefighters. It was also noted that one of the remotes is broken and Murray suggested that they get it fixed and use the manual button inside in the meantime.
