A vote on the Vote Center plan is anticipated this morning during the Starke County Election Board’s meeting.
The Vote Center Plan would move the county from the current status of precinct polling sites to Vote Center sites. The move to a Vote Center county would allow any eligible voter the chance to vote at any of the seven Vote Centers proposed in the draft plan. If approved, they would be located at Koontz Lake Property Owners Building, Hamlet Fire James R. Hardesty Community Building, Washington Township Community Building, Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox, North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department, San Pierre Fire Department, and the Bass Lake-California Township Fire Department on Election Day. It would also allow two sites to be open two weeks prior to Election Day for early voting.
Board member Harrison Fields opposed the vote to accept the Vote Center plan during a meeting earlier this month. He stated that he has more questions to be answered before he takes a vote.
In order for the plan to move forward, it needs to have unanimous approval from all three Starke County Election Board members. It was said during Tuesday’s Starke County Council meeting that Fields will be sending his proxy to today’s meeting.
In addition to the Vote Center plan, Clerk Bernadette Welter Manuel plans to give an update on items discussed during an election conference in Indianapolis and the board members will review the current candidate list.
This morning’s Starke County Election Board meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT in the ground floor meeting room in the Starke County Annex No. 1 building at 53 E. Mound Street in Knox.
