Starke County EMA Director J. Nier told the Starke County Council members and Commissioners this week that she received new radios that were purchased with grant funds.
In 2019, she applied for and received the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Grant (SHSP) for radios. She indicated that 99 radios were received and will be programmed.
Councilman Brad Hazelton asked Nier how many radios would be allocated for each of the county’s fire departments.
“We’re still trying to figure all that out to spread it all around so we can equal it out and stay in line with the grant. I think the fire departments are looking at seven or eight per department,” said Nier.
She will return in a few months to update the government leaders about grants she will be applying for in the spring round.
It was also noted that she obtained a $2,905 grant to purchase personal protection equipment for the police officers. Another $399 was received with the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grant to purchase items related to treat hazardous spills.
