LaPorte Sheriff’s Office Reports Increases in Several Violent Crime Categories in 2019

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office saw increases in several violent crime categories last year. Its 2019 annual report was released last week.

It showed that the number of robberies and batteries went up from the year before. The number of homicides went from zero to three, but Sheriff John Boyd says that all of those took place in private homes and the victims were related to the suspects, who were quickly arrested. At the same time, the number of rapes reported to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office dropped from five in 2018 to just one in 2019. The number of traffic crashes also decreased, including personal injury and fatality crashes. The Sheriff’s Office is touting a 64-percent reduction in the number of alcohol-related crashes.

Overall in 2019, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office handled over 31,000 calls for service, issued almost 3,500 traffic citations, and gave out more than 8,100 warnings. Deputies arrested almost 1,400 people, while the Warrants Division served more than 2,900 criminal arrest warrants.
