The Town of Hamlet is among the communities waiving late fees on utility bills during the public health emergency. The town council passed a resolution last week officially making the change.
However, Council President Dave Kesvormas stipulated that utility customers who are unable to pay their bill must explain the reason in writing. “That way, it’s not a he said, she said over the phone and, ‘I never told you that,’” Kesvormas said. “When they anticipate, if they’re furloughed, if their work is slow or they got their hours cut, and ‘I can probably be back on track once I get –’ It’s not like we’re trying to punish anybody or hardship.”
Kesvormas felt that federal stimulus money should eventually help residents cover their bills. Hamlet Town Hall is currently closed to the public, but residents can continue to place their payments in the drop box near the building.
