State Health Commissioner Updates Guidelines for Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing Sites

The Indiana State Department of Health is expanding the list of who can get tested for COVID-19 at its four drive-through clinics. Up until now, it was limited to health care professionals, first responders, and other essential workers showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Now, State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box says that anyone who lives with those individuals and is showing symptoms can also be tested. “We know that if someone in your household is sick and you’re a nurse or a physician, you really should probably stay home because of the risk of you showing up with a sickness,” Box said during Tuesday’s press conference. “If we can test that individual and know that they’re negative, then we feel much better about you being able to go about your job using your mask and going on and taking care of our most needy across the state.”

Additionally, Box says that anyone with COVID-19 symptoms who is at a higher risk of complications due to age, weight, or underlying health conditions may also use the drive-through testing sites. They’re operating through Friday this week in Fort Wayne, Gary, Evansville, and Sellersburg. When it comes to testing at hospitals and doctor’s offices, Dr. Box says she encourages health care professionals to test anyone who they feel has COVID-19, especially if they have any of the risk factors.
