An Indiana State Trooper and North Judson native was seriously hurt, when an SUV reportedly crashed into his police car early Wednesday. Trooper Corey Adam was investigating a single-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of I-80/94 just after midnight, according to State Police.
Police say he was in the driver’s seat of his police car, which was parked behind a Mercedes that had hit the median wall, when it was struck by a Chevrolet SUV at a high rate of speed. The impact reportedly caused Adam’s car to hit the wall and the other vehicle. Two other troopers who were also investigating were able to get Adam out of his car as it was leaking gasoline.
Adam was taken to the hospital. In an update Wednesday afternoon, State Police said he’s expected to make a full recovery.
The driver of the Chevy, Cameron D. Geweniger, 30, of Wheaton, Illinois, was taken to the Lake County Jail on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, and reckless driving.
I-80/94 was closed for about five hours, due to the crash. The Gary fire and police departments assisted at the scene.
