The Culver Town Council members took action Tuesday night to adjust the rate per gallon the East Shore Corporation pays the town to pump and haul waste from the failed wetland disbursement system to be treated in the town’s wastewater treatment facility.
Corporation representative Kathy Clark told the members that her recollection of a previous discussion concerning the pump and haul rate was that the town would lower the rate from six cents a gallon to four cents a gallon when the summer tourist season started. With the increase of residents to Culver in the summer, the amount of waste would increase. It was discussed at the time to lower the rate when that occurs to provide a bit of financial relief.
The town council thought that there may not be the typical increase between now and the completion of the project which is anticipated in mid July.
In the end, the council agreed to compromise with a drop to five cents a gallon retroactive to May 1.
Clark said the East Shore Corporation has paid about $233,000 in pump and haul costs since mid-August with about 2 million gallons hauled during that time. She noted that the current construction of a Conservancy District in that area is about 29 percent complete. Corporation officials are looking to hook a Conservancy District to the town’s Wastewater Treatment Facility system to treat the waste from the estimated 100 homes in the area.
