Hamlet Park Board Unveils Plans for Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walkway

Plans have been finalized for a Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walkway in the Hamlet Town Park. The plans drawn up by Territorial Engineering were publicly presented during Wednesday’s Hamlet Park Board meeting.

The four-foot-wide concrete path will generally run along the park’s edges but would pass to the east of the basketball court. Town officials noted that the plan was simplified slightly from initial proposals, and the section along Division Street won’t technically be part of the project, since a sidewalk will be built there with funding from a Community Crossings matching grant.

The Hamlet American Legion has raised funds to help with the project cost. That money will likely pass through the Starke County Community Foundation, before going to the town to make the payments.

The path will be dedicated to the memory of Robert J. Tauteris Jr., a Hamlet resident who died while serving in Afghanistan in January of 2012. Park board members got their first look Wednesday at a plaque that will be displayed in Tauteris’s memory.
