Businesses may be reopening and Hoosiers may be returning to their workplaces, but State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box says residents need to keep working to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“We need to remember that this is the new normal, not normal, the new normal,” she said during Thursday’s COVID-19 press conference. “We can’t forget about social distancing, washing our hands, wearing a mask, or, most importantly, staying home if you’re sick. I know life is going to look different. But that means it’ll also look safer.”
Box noted that wearing a mask helps protect others from your own respiratory droplets, and it’s especially important indoors when other people are present. She even demonstrated how to put one on. “This should go over your ears securely or be tied at the top of your head and at your neck, and it has to cover your nose, here,” she explained.
Box also urged Hoosiers to be cautious when using cell phones. “Your cell phone is probably one of the dirtiest things that you carry with you,” she said. “You put it up to your face and your mouth all the time. Carry little alcohol swabs and just wipe it down. Use ear buds if you have them so you aren’t putting it up to your face all the time.”
Additionally, those who are elderly or at high-risk should continue to stay home and practice social distancing. “And no matter how much you want to, don’t hug your elderly mom or grandma on Mother’s Day,” Box added. “In fact, avoid hugs and kisses and handshakes completely here for a while.”
Box said she expects to see the number of COVID-19 cases go up when things start to reopen.
