Suspect Arrested in Wanatah Shooting

An investigation surrounding a shooting in Wanatah resulted in the arrest of a suspect.

Jason Wetzel, 58, was charged with murder following the service of an arrest warrant Wednesday morning.  He was already being held in the La Porte County Jail.  He is suspected of murder in the shooting death of his son, 33-year-old Jeremiah J. Wetzel. 

An autopsy conducted at Franciscan Health in Michigan City on Wednesday morning found that Jeremiah Wetzel’s death was ruled a homicide. 

The incident reportedly occurred in the 8200 West block of County Road 1500 South in rural Cass Township in La Porte County on Monday night.  The initial report indicated that after LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies got to the residence, they saw someone leaving the home and immediately took that person into custody. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound inside the home. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jason Wetzel remains in the La Porte County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.

Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
