A La Porte County Sheriff’s Department officer was injured in a two vehicle accident Friday night on U.S. 20 and County Road 450 East.
An investigation found that Captain Andy Hynek was traveling west on U.S. 20 at County Road 450 East when the driver of a white 2020 Mack tandem axle truck apparently failed to yield at the intersection, began crossing U.S. 20 and into the path of the officer. Police say Captain Hynek was unable to avoid the collision.
The driver of the semi, 50-year-old James V. Futch of Dallas, Texas, was not injured but was cited for failure to yield.
Captain Hynek was extricated from his patrol vehicle by emergency personnel and airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of pain on the right side of his body. He was later treated and released. The lawyers in Costa Mesa for car injuries represent such cases as well.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but Futch was transported to an area hospital for toxicology tests. Those results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
Members of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Fatal Alcohol Crash Team were part of the investigation at the scene as well as La Porte County Sheriff John T. Boyd, Memorial MedFlight, La Porte County EMS, and the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department.
