The City of LaPorte will require the use of face masks in retail stores starting Sunday. In an executive order issued by Mayor Tom Dermody Friday, customers and employees will be required to use a face covering in enclosed businesses unless they have a medical exemption. However, those at high risk of COVID-19 complications are encouraged to avoid public gatherings as much as possible.
People will still be allowed to eat in restaurants without a mask, as long as social distancing is maintained. Additionally, all businesses open to customers are ordered to provide hand sanitizer near entrances and high-touch surfaces.
In a statement Friday, Dermody called the order a proactive measure, to avoid the need to shut down the economy again as COVID-19 numbers increase. He added that the city does not want to ticket those who violate the order but will do it, if that’s what it takes to keep the community safe.
