The deadline to purchase commemorative pavers for the Starke County Veterans War Memorial Plaza project has been extended.
The new deadline is now July 8.
The single brick paver is $150 and the double brick paver is $350. Donors can have a veteran’s name engraved on the paver or simply have a business name, resident’s name or family included. Logos can be printed on the larger pavers.
Forms can be found at the Auditor’s Office in the Starke County Annex No. 1 Building in Knox, at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox, the Knox VFW Post #748, the security station at the Starke County Courthouse, or by contacting committee member Kathy Norem at 574-806-3910. Information can also be found on the county’s fundraising website on www.patronicity.com where more funds are being sought for a $50,000 matching grant. The purchase of pavers can count toward the fundraising goal, or other contributions can be made on the website. The county has until July 21 to raise the money in order to get the matching funds from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
The Starke County Veterans War Memorial Plaza is in the process of being constructed on the southeast corner of the Starke County Courthouse Square. It will feature the names of fallen Starke County soldiers in wars dating back to the Civil War. It will be accessible for all to view with seating available. The next step will be the installation of electric and the application of concrete by volunteers Nathan Chambers and Doug Allen. It is the hope of the committee to complete the project by Veteran’s Day when the dedication ceremony would take place.
