Governor Announces New Stage in Back on Track Plan

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Governor Eric Holcomb has amended the Back on Track plan to include a stage of 4.5.

The amendment comes as a response to an increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19, Governor Holcomb announced during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

“We are prepared over the next two weeks leading up to July 18 to go to Stage 4.5 which means much will stay the same over the next two weeks and some things will change,” stated Governor Holcomb.  “We just have to accept the fact this virus is on the prowl and it’s moving.  It’s moving even within our borders in different counties in our state at different positivity rates.”

He noted the decision was not made in haste, but it was driven by data as presented by State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box.

“Hospitalization numbers had trended down until the last week or so,” explained Dr. Box.  “On April 8, we had 1,749 people who were hospitalized with COVID-19.  We had a low of 595 on June 26, but numbers have once again increased.  As of today, 668 Hoosiers were hospitalized with COVID-19.  As of June 25, we are seeing about 33 new COVID patients being admitted every day.”

The modified plan continues the limitation on social gatherings to 250 until July 18 while restaurants will remain at a 75 percent capacity rate. Bar seating and nightclub operations will continue with a 50 percent seating capacity.  Cultural, entertainment and tourism sites may continue operations at 50 percent capacity as well as movie theaters, bowling alleys, amusement parks, water parks, and raceways.

Beginning Saturday, July 4, fairs, festivals, youth camps and similar outdoor events may open.

K-12 schools may open for the school year.  Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities may resume on July 6.

Outdoor visitation is required at assisted living facilities and nursing homes beginning July 4 and indoor visitation may begin. Hospital visitations with precautions are encouraged.
