N.J.-S.P. Uses CARES Act Money to Hire Student Support Services Coordinator, Interventionists

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is using CARES Act funding to make sure students don’t fall behind during the pandemic. The school board last week approved the hiring of four new staff members with the federal money.

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said a new student support services coordinator has been added to serve as a liaison to families using the virtual learning option, among other duties. “We don’t want the virtual learners to get lost in the shuffle because they’re not physically here at school,” Zupin told board members. “He will make sure that there is constant connection and communication, and any needs that arise, they will contact him. I just feel like that’s a very good position.”

Additionally, Zupin said the elementary and junior/senior high school will each get a new math interventionist. “We are concerned that students have been out of school for a long time and we know how important those basic math skills are, and we don’t want them to lose ground.”

The CARES Act money will also fund a new assistant to the speech language pathologist. Zupin said that leaves some money left over for other needs that may come up in the next year-and-a-half, such as more teachers for virtual learning.
