Starke County Adjusts Requirements for Face Masks in Schools

The Starke County Health Department is updating its mask mandate, to bring it in line with the statewide mask order when it comes to schools. Starke County’s mandate took effect last Wednesday, just hours before Governor Holcomb announced his own order.

Starke County’s original order required that children age three and up wear face coverings in school, with few exceptions. The statewide order, on the other hand, only requires masks in school buildings for students in grades three and up, and explicitly allows students to remove their masks if social distancing requirements can be met in the classroom. However, everyone over the age of two is required to wear a mask on a school bus, unless they’re exempt from doing so under the governor’s order.

Starke County’s order is officially being amended to follow the state’s guidance for K-through-12 educational institutions. The change takes effect this Wednesday.
