Hamlet is getting a Dollar General. Site development plans were for the 9,100-square-foot store were approved by the town’s zoning board Wednesday. It’ll be located near U.S. 30, west of the old Hollywood restaurant.
Board President Dave Kesvormas said he can’t wait for the store to open. “We’re just very open arms, welcoming them into town and looking forward for them to be here,” he said.
“We definitely need them,” added Board Member Connie Bailey.
Wednesday’s official approval comes after months of discussions with town officials. Plans call for construction to begin this fall and wrap up in the spring. The new store is expected to bring about 10 jobs.
The zoning board was also tasked with assigning the property with an official address, which proved to be a bit of a challenge. Board members settled on 5700 North 600 East. But Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts says that after the meeting, town officials realized the directions should be reversed and revised the address to 5700 East 600 North. Then, Pitts says they discovered that address had already been taken, and changed the address once again, this time to 5800 East 600 North.
