West Central Reminds Parents of Updated Mask Guidelines, Reopening Plans

The West Central School Corporation is reminding parents of adjustments to its reopening plans, following the latest orders from Governor Holcomb.

In a letter to parents Saturday, Superintendent Dan Zylstra noted that all students are required to wear masks while riding the school bus, and all students in grades three through 12 will have to wear masks in the building. But there are some exceptions.

Students will be able to take off their masks in the classroom if they’re at least six feet apart or, if they’re all facing the same direction, at least three feet apart. Zylstra acknowledges that there will be a learning curve with masks.

Additionally, West Central has turned off its drinking fountains. Instead, there will be water bottle filling stations, and students will be asked to bring refillable bottles to stay hydrated.

At this point, West Central still plans to start school as scheduled on August 12 and to “keep things as normal as possible.” Families choosing the online learning option are asked to contact their school principal by Tuesday. West Central will also be sending parents a transportation survey, to gauge how many students will be riding the bus.
